CINCINNATI TRIP PHOTOS

We have a few. Most were taken at the Baroque Violin Shop. Richard Young, a Lafayette graduate and former member of the Orchestra now studying music at UC, appears in the last couple of pictures. Click the link at the left to see them.

OLD TOWN VIOLINS

The grand prize in the Area Concert Raffle was a $500 violin donated to the Orchestra by Old Town Violins. You can visit their website by clicking here. The store is located at 151A East Third St in downtown Lexington.

AREA CONCERT PHOTOS

We have about 100 photos taken at the Area Concert. More than half of them were taken by Emily Coovert, a former orchestra member and now a photojournalism student at UK. She may have hung from the rafters and crawled on the floor to take some of them. Emily's photos have "EC" in the file name. Click the link at the left to see them.

MACAULEY CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION

Congratulations to Adam Wolfbrandt, Amanda DiMascio, Jonathan Karp, and Heeju Son on winning the Macauley Chamber Music Competition in Louisville last week. Adam also received the Kentucky Federated Music Club's Wendell Irish Award for viola.

REVISED CINCINNATI TRIP INFORMATION

We have changed a couple of things to help more students be able to attend the spring orchestra trip to Cincinnati. We will now be leaving Friday, May 2, instead of Thursday, as originally planned. We will still return on Saturday, May 3. We will also be taking district buses instead of charter buses. The itinerary has not changed.

The itinerary includes a concert with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, a visit to the Baroque Violin Shop, a masterclass at the Conservatory of Cincinnati, and a day at Kings Island.

The student and parent cost for the trip will be $150. This includes transportation, room for one night, one breakfast, two lunches, two dinners, hotel security, concert tickets, and tickets to Kings Island. The chaperone cost for the trip will be $200 (more because the room is double occupancy instead of quadruple occupancy). Payment can be made in full or in three equal installments of $50 due March 18, March 25, and April 8. Checks should be made payable to Lafayette Orchestra Boosters.

Please note that we are NOT in the business of making the trip unattainable for students or parents and we will work with all families in order to allow all students to participate. Please remember that we are also on a trip payment schedule ourselves for the group. Once the student signs up for the trip, we have to pay for that student whether they go or not, so all money is non-refundable. If unforseen circumstances arise, i.e., sickness, family emergency, etc., you may try and find a replacement for full or half the cost. The boosters WILL NOT REFUND ANY MONEY FOR ANY REASON after March 3, 2008.

ORCHESTRA NEWS

There were 72 participants in the Solo & Ensemble competition on November 17. Awards were as follows:
  • 41 students received Distinguished
  • 26 students received Proficient
  • 4 students received Apprentice
  • 1 student received Novice
Fourteen students were recommended for the State Solo & Ensemble competition to be held at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond on May 17.

    LAFAYETTE ORCHESTRA YEARLY FEE

Orchestra fees are an unfortunate necessity. They are, however, extremely inexpensive when compared to the cost associated with most other school-related extracurricular activity your student might choose.

Fees cover the cost of Orchestra T-shirt, end-of-year banquet ticket for student, solo & ensemble solo fee, music, transportation, venue fees, participation fees in area-wide contests and festivals, guest clinician or sectional coaches, awards, etc.

The fee for String Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra is $80 for one year. (This may be paid in two $40 semester payments.)
